Eight to eleven supercells over Sydney in a single afternoon

Looking back at 20 December 2018, Sydney copped something the city rarely sees. Over a three to four hour stretch, as many as eight to eleven major storms moved through — most of them supercells by the look of them. That is a lot of severe storms to stack into one afternoon over one city. With storms firing back to back, the day has gone down as unprecedented, and when you look at the run of cells it is hard to argue. Supercells are the organised, rotating type of thunderstorm, the ones that carry big hail and can hold together for hours rather than dumping and fading. Firing that many in a row over Sydney meant one cell after another had the chance to put hail over a fresh set of suburbs. Anyone who was out in it, or who woke up to a car full of dents the next day, remembers the day clearly. It remains one of the most remarkable single-afternoon storm outbreaks ever recorded in the city.
